Results:

With one side jacked up, other on floor.....

not in gear: wheel turns freely...

in gear: wheel locks up....

So....is it or is it not a lsd?

Spoke to a diff company yesterday, although the guy never saw a diff like mine he said all I explained to him and what he saw on the pic I sent him indicates that it is an lsd.....

Aperently if it was open it would still be able to turn even though the car was in gear.....

So all indicated that the origenal diff was removed and replaced by an lsd.....

Dude... no. Unfortunately it sounds like an open diff to me.
The only way one wheel will turn if the other is on the ground and the car is in gear is if the engine is also turning or the diff is broken. (I don't think that's your case.)

Go to www.howstuffworks.com and look up how a diff works. Then from that work out yourself what you have. Its clear now you only know enough to confuse yourself.

Dude....it should have been clear from the start that I only knew enough about diffs to confuse myself....that is why I searched the net and asked a question on this forum....but glad you caught on eventually

I first assumtion was that I had an open diff....but the finned cover still makes me ask why?

I agree with Guy, sounds like an open diff...

Nissan SA has a habit of throwing the production specs out the window, you might find that they thought because we have a sub saharan climate the diffs might need extra cooling and fitted all the diffs covers with fins.

I agree...it seems it is an open diff....and your theory of the cover makes sense.

My 200zr does not have a diff cooler like yours draco
