Perfect Power XMS can also control your VVT. The sr20det system is much like the toyota 20v vvt or daihatsu vvt. Not like V-tec at all. The SR20VE (VVL) has cams with secondary lobes for high rpm. That's the equivalent of Vtec.
IIRC the VVT gear on the SR20DET needs replacing after about 120k km (don't quote me on this) and it's very pricey. Also, most modded SR's make better power and tune easier without the VVT. That's why everyone changes it.
