Cheers M ! Thanks for popping by...see you on Wednesday at the Rock ??
Today I was at the shop at 5:30 again..could not sleep. At 7 a buddy of mine arrives and we decide to do my gearbox change.
At 8:30 the old , hot box was lying on the ground and we checked a few things while it was out.
The clutch slave pin that was fitted to the car was way too long which kept the thrust bearing in constant contact with the pressure plate fingers.
Sad to say but I need to do a clutch soon as the fingers have worn about 2/3 rds where the thrust makes contact ..Mmmm, moar money.
Also found that the box usually takes 6 bolts to hold it to the engine. Only 4 were fitted of which 2 were stripped ! More on this later.
The prop center hangar bearing mounts were also stripped into the body.
I had noticed that when I gave here some welly and then shifted into 5th, it would vibrate slightly under my seat .
The alen head cap screws that were used to hold the rear yoke flange onto the diff were also inserted the wrong way round. Then the alen caps were cut down with an angle grinder to clear which also made the bolts smooth heads and not alen caps anymore ! Luckily they were also pretty loose and we could get them undone by holding the head with a vise grip pliers.
The original Nissan gearbox mount was fine but was not attached to the cross member at all. No nuts on the studs. All of this contributed to a lot of "loosness" and vibration under the car .
While we were at it, I replaced the diff mountings with the Energy stuff I had bought from Rezlo.
The new box slipped in and after all the threaded holes and stuff was repaired and helicoiled, we tightened it all up.
Missing bolts were replaced and the stripped holes were all ok on the new box.
WHAT A FANTASTIC DIFFERENCE !! The car is tight, solid, and most of all, no vibrations or WHINING ! Yea !!
Slowly but surely she is coming together .
