I don't know why but the "occationally" thing bothers me....

Damn that means you have the 8 port head.
To my understanding (I will confirm) disconnected mean the butterflies remain closed.
But if it came like that from the factory they could have removed the butterflies plates

This means?

my ford tracer 1300 also had that stupid 8 port stuff.
i ripped it out quickly!!! made no difference other than having way more responsiveness from the engine.
but then again - it could've been the weber 36dcd that also made it more responsive. or did that give it more power.
hmmm...
i'm confussing myselves now!
just take it out draco!!! your 8 butterflies i mean!!!!

Disconnected means its always open. Pretty much like they arent even there.
Its not so easy to 'just take them out'. Maby if you had the engine out and are stripping it anyway!

No, I am not stripping it and there is no reason to take it out so it must just ma stay there, I am not going to screw up 5 other things to take something out that is not really having any negative effect on my enjine.

kekekeke
but seriously, after looking at the part in the pic, I think it is called a vagina - although I haven't gone that deep before

Yip those are the butterfly actuator - found on the JAP engine / 8 intake port head.
Like you maggots said, you can rip that shit out yo...

But there is some work involved, you'll need to remove your plenum, and then you'll see the butterfly's, they take 2 screws you can remove to remove the butterflies.
Now these engine's run fine with them, my advice leave them in, if your car is stock, if you plan to do huge power mods take them out.
The jap engine gives more torque than the euro engine anyway

The pipy coming out of it goes to a copper pipe that gous in underneath the manifold.
At the moment it is not in the way, I don't have the guts to take it out anyway, if there was something to gain from it at the moment I would have suggested a braai at my place so "WE" could take it out, but as I gather there is no real gain at the moment so I will leave it.
Thanks for the info guys!
