Ya, you are probably right. I've had the car for less than a month so I've probably never felt it running properly.
I just got a call for the mechanic saying there is lots wrong with the car and he can't fix it (...which was expected). I'l find out the details when I go collect her in a few mins.
Ok, I got my sx back from the mechanic. he says that the previous owner has really stuff up all the mixture setting on the car. This may have been done because there is an underlying problem with it, or the guy just didn't know what he was ding.
Anyway, he gave me the number of a fuel injection specialist to take it to. But this guy isn't so keen on taking on the job because parts are so hard to come by. He's agreed to take a look tho.
What do u guys reckon? Does this sound bad, or with a bit of time and money will I be able to get her running like she shld be? ... also, any advise?
whats wrong with the car that you took it to the mechanic?
Have you replaced the DET and water temp sensor yet?
Checked timing?
spark plugs? checked all sensors are plugged in?
Basic wire loom check if you can see any signs of damaged wires?
Do that first and then see whats wrong, and then you can try to explain to us what its doing.
One thing i always hated hearing when something was wrong with the car is the mixtures are set wrong or your ECU is blown ect warra warra!
he could be right, because you can change mixture settings on the AFM. but that is a quick check to see if the little screw on the AFM has been "screwed" with, so to speak!!!
injectors could have been replaced or not, they could be damaged or not, leaky or not, and so on...
the fuel pressure regulator could've been screwed with or not...
the fuel pump as well could have been changed or not, or screwed with or not...
the fuel filter could be new or not, dirty or not, etc etc etc!!!
so he may be right.
but all of those things could be likely or not.
you'll have to find out broo!

basics = go have a close look at your Air Flow meter. AFM. near the plug is a little round protrusion that will be in one of 3 states:
1. is covered by a black rubber stop thingy
2. looks like there is could be a hole underneath that shiny silver thingy
3. has had the shiny silver thingy removed, and in the depths of the brass insert you can see a screw.
if it isnt in state 1 or 2 - then its likely that someone has messed with the mixtures!

Thanks for the input guys. I will try get all the basics sorted before I do anything drastic.
The fuel filter and spark plugs is new as of today but, I think the AFM has been tampered with tho.

It has been running very rich and stalling on deceleration if you push it hard.
I haven't changed any of the sensors yet... could the faulty sensors be causing the car to run like this?
Thx Daniel, I'l try get all those thing you mentioned looked at. I'm taking the car to a fuel injection specialist on monday.

Thanks, veecee. I'l check and make sure. But my mechanic did mention that it had been tampered with.
Dude really, you have to change those sensors before taking it anywhere! the ECU is doing weird sh1t now, ofcourse its not going to run properly, its running rich probably because its trying to avoid det...you know with your faulty det sensor.
Watertemp probably most spares places, just take ur faulty one with you.
Det sensor, aint got a clue unfortunately

Ya, thanks, I've realized that now. I'm busy trying to get the sensors sorted atm.
I did some tests 2day. It seems that the engine coolant temperature sensor is working but the wiring to the ecu may be shorting somewhere... I followed the service manual's diagnostics for this. There is no continuity from either terminal to the ecu... There is continuity between the two terminals of the plug. Would this mean there is a short?
Also found out my det sensor isn't even connected... there is just a loose wire that I believe should connect to the sensor. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a plug on the end of that wire, or if it just connect straight into the sensor?? ... Not sure if the actual sensor is working or not coz its so damn hard to get to
Probably gonna try the resistor trick 2moro as a temporary solution and so that I can test if that wire is actually for the det sensor...
veecee wrote:the ECU will definitely not like that!
Hehe no it won't... I'm actually quite happy about this tho. Coz at least I know exactly what some of my problems are
I now know that the loose wire was definitely supposed to be connected to the det sensor... coz there is continuity between it and pin 23 on the ecu, as there shld be.
I bypassed the det sensor 2day and rewired the engine coolant temp sensor. Now I'm getting code 55!! Meaning all is fine
My sx feel alot smoother now. I don't think it is running as rich as it was and the idle is much better
... the revs still drop pretty low on deceleration but it hasn't sounded like it wants to stall yet. I'l find out if its better once I've driven her more.
