So you have a rattly and noisy engine . It sounds like a lifter or even worse a bearing knock !
To test if its the VVL variator simply supply the VVL solenoid with 12v battery power while the engine is idling.
The noise will go away and when power is removed , the clacking will re appear..

Nissan S.A. wants R17 K for a unit now.

Mark at Nissan of Chesapeake in the States is sending me one for R3400.00.

Slightly of topic, wel sort off. :)
On a vg you just replace the spring inside the cam gear, this will set you back a whole $18 ex shipping for two heavy duty/ upgrade springs, one for each inlet cam.
And this is where the cheap factor on a vg ends, the rest costs both arms and both legs. :facepalm:
