SR20DET Gearbox issues

Post by N3XU5 »

Hi guys,

First time posting. Still noob @ the car thing, but yeah bought myself a nice 200sx with sr20det motor. I took the car to a gear box and diff repair place here in PTA and i had someone have a listen, apparently the " Main Drive " has these teeth like things that are all broken on it so my box is very noisy when i drive but, so i dont have any issues with the Syncro as that will be scratching i found that out today lol.

Ok so i will shift from 1st to 2nd, when this problem occurs after that not much of an issue. Now if i put my foot down from 1st to 2nd its like a tick tick sound so im assuming that's the teeth not catching? i dunno.. i asked them what they would charge to fix it, they quoted me R4200 and this would get me a new refurbished gear box with a 6 month Guarantee.

Now is that a rip off ? What other options do i have? lol maybe a 6 speed gear box :D//

anyway thanks !

The 6 speed from the S15 is supposedly weaker than the 5 speed. Probably only a issue if you plan on running big power.
Then you need to find one of course.

I haven't researched pricing but R4600 sounds like a decent price for a refurbished unit, does that include fitting?

S15 6 speed is shit and you need a lot of parts to do the conversion.

now 350z 6 speed you will never look back again

Well, lol that 6 speed sounds great. But im happy with my car just going for now wanna spend money on things to make sure its running smoothly. I called the people there and they said its just some regular nissan gear box not much info on that. Just dont want the car to have some crappy gear box

My guess is they will put in a skyline gearbox, the 2L non turbo manual boxes, which is ok, just make sure they are not swopping parts from the 1 tonners, not familiar on the gear ratios but I should think that would be a problem, especially top end.

Just try and get spacifics, always better to know before than after...

I think the 350z gb youll need lots of parts?

just of the top of my head

s15 box has no speed sensor as it is mounted on the diff
S15 flywheel
S15 clutch
S15 flywheel bolts
new drive shaft
S15 gearbox mounting bolts
S15 gear shifter
s15 release bearing
s15 clutch release fork if it does not come with box

350z you get a adaptor plate to fit to sr20
use sr clutch and flywheel
custom drive shaft

I might be wrong but from what I can gather is the z33 box you need an adapter plat or cut and weld the bellhousing, You need to shorten the shifter bracket (or cut a new hole in the chasis somewhere about's the ash tray) and you need drive shaft, pretty sure you need some other mounting brackets and bolts, whats the chance that that just lines up?.. source: http://zilvia.net/f/drivetrain/370705-z ... ities.html

s15 you dont seem to need alot except this kit: http://www.frsport.com/NISMO-3137S-RRS5 ... 26316.html
Im pretty sure the bellhousing, drive shaft etc are the same, altho apparently it is deaper, s15 does have dual clutch plate but I guess its not necessary to use that and keep single plate disc.

They both seem to have a different type of work needed to get it to work properly. Personally I would do the z32 box for the strength benefit but I don't see that the s15 is more complicated to fit?
