Wheelz of Fury: World First Collaboration heads to Cape Town South Africa in Adrenalin-fuelled Motorfest

South Africa’s premier drift exhibition team D1S, in collaboration with Drift Africa and World-renown Japanese drift outfit Team Orange, will make history at Killarney Racetrack come March 21st 2012 (Human Rights Day). This landmark event will feature South Africa’s top 32 Drifters, along with the best from neighboring Mozambique battling it out for top honours against the super-talented Naoto Suenaga of Team Orange, Japan. The day will also feature Cape Town’s best spinners on show and the quickest cars over a ¼ mile in the Regional MSA Drags. For the more streetable cars, the very popular Street 2 Strip drag racing will also be taking place on the day. In addition to having one of the best D1GP drifters grace us with his presence, international cult icons OPTION DVD will be here to document proceedings – the first time ever filming on the African Continent. GT300 racing series champion Masataka Bandoh will be presenting on the day for the OPTION DVD team. The judging panel will be run by Hiroke Furuse or “Sleepy” as he is more popularly known as. D1S drifters will be putting on exhibition drift demos on the 21st as well. The official launch party of the event will take place at The Assembly in the Cape Town CBD on Tuesday 20th March. The nearby parking lot will house all the competing drift cars as well as showcars and bikes. DJ Ready D and the GHFM Ridez n Vibez team will be broadcasting live from the venue. The party line up includes Jack Parow, DJ Ready D, Niskron 1, Lee Munati, Leytin Lee, Keaton – Grime House and Gareth Eden Oliver. Take this opportunity to get acquainted with all the local and international drifters and special guests. The D1S promo ladies will be on hand to pre-sell you tickets for raceday so can witness history in the making! R40 gets you in and kids under 12 enter free. One lucky GHFM listener will win a ride along in a drift car with Naoto Suenaga for guessing the correct car sound during the live outside broadcast.

SPECIAL GUESTS

Naoto Suenega (Japan)

Suenaga-san as he is affectionately known amongst his adoring fans is two-time D1GP Street Champion and also fulltime DoriGoya drifting teacher at EBISU (Drift Circuit and home of Team Orange). He will pilot the second Border Towing Nissan R34 Skyline pushing in excess of 400kW and is regarded as one of the most technical drivers on the current D1GP series.

OPTION DVD & Masataka Bandoh (Japan)

Whilst that may be enough to whet the appetites of petrolheads, there are more special appearances and World Firsts scheduled. The World-famous OPTION DVD franchise will also be in attendance to capture the spectacle on video. This will be the first time ever that OPTION will be visiting South African shores to document South African Drifting and Spinning culture. Spinning, a uniquely South African sport has caught the attention of major motorsport fraternities across the globe due to its entertainment factor. Japan may have given the world Drifting but SA might just give the world spinning. No DVD production would be complete without a presenter and who better than Masataka Bandoh to introduce the world to the South African scene? Masataka is a famous and successful racing driver and presenter on OPTION DVD. His accolades include 2009 Super GT300 champion and manager of the Japanese GTA federation (Super GT Association). 2012 Will also see him compete in the GT500 class of the FIA GT series. He will be riding shotgun in some of the drift and spinning cars on the day.

Hiroke “Sleepy” Furuse (Japan)

Sleepy is the manager of Team Orange and can be found training drifters at Ebisu. He is also team manager of the Sumo Power R35 GT-R FIA GT Team and is held in high regard amongst the drift elite the World over. He will be judging the event alongside Jody Powell of Drift Africa.

KEY DRIFTERS

Wade Van Zummeren (East London, SA)

Wade has been involved in many different disciplines of racing from a very young age. These include WesBank V8 series, National Oval track and Rally. He is currently the reigning South African Super Drift Champion and has been drifting only just over two years. He has competed in the 2010 D1GP Street Legal event in Japan and the 2010 World Drift Summit where qualified a very impressive second against more experienced and better funded teams. In April of 2012 he will be kicking up a gear to the big league by competing against the best Japan has to offer in the premier D1 Grand Prix event in Tokyo Odaiba. He will be the youngest and first-ever South African to enter the series in his 440kW Border Towing Nissan R33 Skyline.

Otto Graven (Kimberley, SA)

Otto is currently the most successful drifter in SA and a true pioneer of the sport locally. Starting off with a modified M3 CSL back in 2006, he has helped grow the sport to new levels thanks to his development of drivers at his multi-faceted race facility, MonsterMob Raceway. His impressive collection of machinery includes several BMW’s, Nissan Skylines, 350Zs and Toyota Supras. He has trained under the worlds best in Japan at the Team Orange Ebisu facility and has exported his talents to the Formula D series in the US where he made history as the first South African to compete in a Pro Drift Series ever. His 600kW Corvette powered 350Z proudly carries the South African Flag as primary livery and has represented the continent with pride and numerous top 16 finishes. Considering he is up against manufacturer funded works teams, that is a great achievement in itself. Otto is also the 2010 SupaDrift Champion. He will piloting his RB26 powered nitrous-injected Nissan 350Z. The cars power output is in excess of 600kW! He will also be bringing down his infamous Toyota Supra as well to entertain the crowds.

Richat Khan (Mozambique)

Representing Mozambique is Richat Khan, another SupaDrift driver with a huge following. He has trained under Team Orange as well and attained Pro D1 certification – the highest possible level in the sport. Definitely one to watch, he will be competing in his insane Nissan R33 Skyline powered by a twin turbo Lexus V8.

Bronny “Red Line” White (Cape Town, SA)

Bronny is one of the newest members of the D1S Dr1ft Squad and has made leaps and bounds of progress in a very short space of time. He has made the transition form Spinning into Drifting look easy and is an example to all spinners wanting to do so. He has also trained under Team Orange and has achieved Pro D1 certification, adding him to a very elite list of South African drivers. With the support of the locals behind him, he is going to be a tough competitor to beat.
Victor Pardal (Johannesburg, SA)

Vic is best known for his MC work at the nation’s biggest car events and for being a presenter on Africa’s number 1 hip hop and car show, Mzanzi Ridez. He hails from Jozi and will be putting on a smoke show in his BMW E30 powered by a 4.4l V8 engine. He has had numerous top 32 placings in SupaDrift and will be doing his best to shine at Wheels of Fury.

Ready D (Cape Town, SA)

Deon Daniels aka DJ Ready D needs no introduction to any fans of Hip Hop music this side of the equator. Apart from being the D1S frontman, Deon has been World no. Hip Hop DJ twice and number 1 African Hip Hop DJ for three years. He is also the lead presenter on Mzanzi Ridez and hosts his own radio show on GHFM four nights a week. The man also lets his talents loose on a drift car whenever he can and is a definite force to be reckoned with on track. He has had some Team Orange training in between his busy schedule and will definitely be a favourite amongst the Cape Town crowd. He will be piloting his Nissan 200SX S14 with 350kW on tap.

Jacques Lemmer (Cape Town, SA)

Being one of the youngest in the field, Jacques might be overlooked by many who don’t know him. That would be a mistake to say the least. He has honed his skills in Japan as well and knows the Killarney circuit like the back of his hand. His BMW E36 is powered by a Chevy 350 Stroker V8 and sounds as good as it goes. By far one of the most entertaining to watch, his “balls to the wall” driving style is a huge bonus to the event and the crowds love him. One to watch? Definitely!

Sean February (Cape Town, SA)

Another graduate of the Team Orange academy, Sean is another who started out as a spinner and has now made the move into Drifting. His BMW E30 known as “German” has cult following all over SA and should be in the reckoning come the 21st. Even though he has less horsepower than most, that deficit should be made up by his experience and skill.
