CA18DET Water pump keeps failing

Post by SMKNG ACE »

Hi guys

I keep replacing water pumps. Gone through 3 in less than 2000km.

Last one only lasted less than 100km and is on its way of seizing.
The original water pump pulley was damaged before so i had one turned but still a problem of failing water pump.
I run the vicous fan setup still and is starting to think it is the problem of failing waterpump issue.

Anyone with other sugestions ?

If I may.....convert to electric fans, maybe the problem lies with your viscus fan.

You might also be over tightening the belt.

Yes was thinking the same thing Draco.

I made sure not to over tighten the belt.

But which electric fan to use?

Thanks

There are a few options, if you want one fan, use the 15" bmw fan or any of the oem fans off the never nissans/volksvagens etc, customize a cowling for it on your radiator or you can go for 2 high velocity 12" fans.

GMB pumps are fine never had issues you need to make sure you buy the correct pump because there are 2 pumps for a ca18 one the blade is a bit bigger and catches the block hence will fail very quickly the other pump is 1 to 2mm shorter and clears perfectly. OEM pump is well over R1000 these days and is not necessary ive drifted with my R300 GMB pump with no issues

Last time I fitted a gmb replacement from middas the pump disintegrated and messed up the waterpump pulley. Bearings and seals where fine upon inspection.

So I have pics of the one comming of and a replacement... But I checked the replacement pump and looks like it will hit the block.
But when I fitted the one comming of no weird noises came from it and did not hit the block.
Also the pump comming of seems to be ok bearing and seal.
Why did it start to grind against the block?

Or is it possible that the shift moved? Thus causing the impeller to grind against the block.

i dont think so never heard of them doing that only scratching cuz its the incorrect pump. Are you not over tightening the belt damaging the pump by ant chance?

I especially took care of not over tightnig the belt.

The pump I took of is good. Bearing and seal is fine. Just some scuffing of the impeller.

Well I will make a plan to sort it out in any case.

Thanks for the input.
