Biggest effective turbo for CA18

Post by Twakkie »

Harro all!

i have a t28 (stallion replica build joppies) fitted to my SX and a couple of other bits and bobs. i was wondering, what is the biggest A/R exhaust housing size you could effectively go and does the A/R size on the compressor housing have a influence on spooling etc? (i have no idea what this A/R busyness is) on my t28 there is a AR.49 marking on the exhaust housing and a AR .42 marking on the compressor housing so i guess that's the size of it?

any bigger and you will effect spool time a nice turbo that produces good power is a gt2871 with .63 ar exhaust housing will be abit more lag but will carry boost till limiter. but this is a pricey turbo so brace yourself

GT2864 is best for CA, run it with 0.63 housing and it will be super smooth.

Okay, so a 0.63 AR ex housing for example is bigger then a 0.49 AR? Hence it takes longer to spool?

what would the effects be for example a turbo with a 0.48 AR ex housing and a 0.42 AR comp. housing

vs.

a turbo with a 0.48 AR ex housing and a 0.70 AR comp. housing (bigger comp. housing between the two)

The bigger the comp housing the more the turbo flows which equates to more power, but you cant push more are into your engine then what you can exhaust. So the bigger your comp is the bigger your turbine housing should be in order not to just generate heat.

Aaaa thank you, that makes sense! These T3/T4 setups then shouldn't work well by that logic?

But going from a 0.49 AR ex. housing to a 0.63 sound like a moerse jump? wont it be too laggy? at what rpm does the boost come in?

t3t4 works just fine for me these small turbo need to be boosted high to get decent power. when selecting a turbo u need to look at a few things

what power are you looking for?
what boost pressure do u want the power?
how much lag is to much for you?
budget?

but ja disco potato works very well on a ca but if you chasing large power thats not the turbo for you.

what figures did you manage with a t3t4? are you running it on a stock CA also? Lag is not too much of an issue (as long as it's not like 5k rpm). I'm sure there has to be better power for value options with a GT28 sitting at round 14k

guess im getting bored is all. sitting at 171wkw at a bar with the t28. up grading to a t3t4 setup wont set me back more then 5k from where im set up at the moment. all the other bits and bobs are in place, pfr, managment, turbo mannie, boost controller, plumbing, 3'' pipe, ext wast gate and and... so its a matter of fitting, changing down pipe flange if needed and dyno, which is due now anyway.

at 170wkw you at the limit get 440cc or 550cc
