Drift Spot Project - South Africa

Ok let me kick this off

What is this about? Well do you have a nice spot where you can safely practice drifting? The idea is to list the spot here, we will be using Google Earth to show the actual location.

Now drifting in public is illegal and we actually want to encourage guys to go to Westbank Raceway to practice, but since that is so far away for most of us not living in the JHB area, we need to make a plan!

I will be creating a page on the 200SX.ZA.NET to showcase all the spots mentioned

Great idea! Can we also add spots for drag racing? I need to find a nice flat long road to test out my GTech :-)

I found a great place. At centurion mall buy the new roof parking by cofi that was recently built. In the early hours of the morning it is enpty. the parking lot is big and open with dividers that are openly spaced. the surface is concerte so it isn't too hard on your tires and the dividers are fun to drift around

Hi Guys,

I like the idea and all, but still think its a bit irrisponsible. We've organised wesbank for a reason, to keep drifting OFF the streets, no matter where or when you do it, drifting is illegal (Law states you're not allowed to intentionally spin your wheels) on public roads (This includes shopping parking lots) So unless you own your own piece of flat land thats tarred I think anything out of a race track is a no go, and dont give me any of this "We do it slowly and safely" bullshit, I've seen pro's spin out before. Personally I dont want the cops starting to clamp down on all RWD cars as a drifter because people are causing kak on the roads.

Lemme give you the plusses of a race track, not even specific to wesbank:
1 - Race prepared track with LOADS of runoff, in the last 4 months since we started the club no-one has ever hit a barrier.
2 - The events are arranged with the SAPS and wesbank holds permits to allow motor racing on their premesis.
3 - We hold the drift events in conjunction with the other motor racing events, so there is always an ambulance and peremedics on stanby.
4 - Support - Between the club members we have Jacks, wheel spanners, Air pumps and at a push we can even get you a set of tyres drive home on even if you've popped your last pair.
5 - R50 a YEAR gets you and 1 other person FREE entry to any wesbank event where we are drifting, thats every wednesday and the last friday and saturday of the month, plus any extra events they ask us to come along with.

The minus..... the only one i can think of is the distance...

In all honesty, you're stupid if you're complaining. I know its far, for me its 100kms there and back, but we're very fortunate to have a part of a race track for practise. Trying to find places on the street to drift is LOOKING FOR SHIT, and it will find you! Chat to a few memebers, Bruno, Snooby, Dislex, they will all tell you. Instead of listing public places, why dont we strech our brain muscles and see if we can get other tracks invloved, Kyalami and Swartkops spring to mind.

If we could find a place off the streets it would be great but as sokar said public places is a big no no, the coppers do pop out of nowhere somehow and crashing into a parking lot tree is not my idea of fun. How much does it cost to tar/cement an area, if someone had a large enough piece of land that is

When reading this, it reminds me that it is always good to get others comments and to listen to others thinking. And in this case I have to fully agree. Drifting so much more dangerous in this way. Drifting in Centurion on open parking lot --- no good.  I think individual drag so much easier. You wont even know where I am going to do it. I need 400 m and finished it off there and then. But yes, this can lead to moeilikheid.
Well for our drag ladder purposes, Derek and myself has done the drag on our own place, one time and nobody else knowing of it.

Sokar I agree with you 100%... I'm NOT ENCOURAGING street drifting...

Bottom Line is I'm gonna do it any ways, many here also do it, I just want to list the spots...

I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GO TO WESTBANK ON SPECIFIED DAYS TO PRACTICE, BUT IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO GO SIDEWAYS WHEN YOU WANT AND AS YOU PLEASE, AND AT YOUR OWN RISK... THIS IS WHERE YOU'LL FIND THE SPOTS!

I also fully agree with Sokar. I think that for us to even encourage finding spots outside a race track is downright irresponsible. My suggestion is that we rather club together and go speak to Zwartkops. Let's at least try - that would be first prize. I'd like it to be known that this club does not sanction any race/drift/drag activities outside of a race track. If you do so, you do this at your own risk and out of your own will.

sorry vlade, or anyone else with the same sentiments regarding illegal motorsports...

we have worked hard to arrange wesbank and have established a healthy and encouraging environment for aspiring drifters to practice.

i agree that using PUBLIC areas for drifting, dragging, or any other motorsports is dangerous. i am not just saying this to appease anyone either. there are many horror stories of people getting hurt, cars getting hurt, and other illegal activities taking place.

so please, please, do not partake in illegal drifting.

i would be really pissed off if the cops starting clamping down on RWD cars, or even any modified cars, as they do in durbs, because of illegal drifting on public streets.

this time, i say DONT do it!

It looks like i'm just not getting the message across or you nana's don't read what i'm writing [smilie=200sx_taz.gif]

I'm not trying to arrange a massive underground drift spots... What i'm saying if you need to go practice some turns are some figure 8's...

Damn china beans... No stop moaning and post spots any more comments and posts will be moved.
