Newbie (help needed)

Post by SMKNG ACE »

Hi guy's

i need some advice but i am still busy with fault finding process as it only started today.

When i drove my S13 200sx (CA18DET) today all seemed to be well but when the car drove about 20km in normal traffic conditions just when i stop and the car comes to idling there are some smoke but no smoke if i give it the beans.
It smelled like oil burning only for a moment.

I took it after the drive again and drove it hard properly and did not notice any smoke ehile driving hard and when at idling.
I am starting to think that it might be the seals going on the turbo ?

Any info on what can possible causes will be greatly appreciated.

I will continue with the fault finding and keep you guy's updated on the status.

what colour is the smoke? black, blue or white?
black = over fueling
blue = turbo seal
white = gasket

Hey bud, I would sugest in any event, if u buy an SX, first thing that should happen is to do a propper service and change out as many seals and gaskets as possible....

Also check that the car has not been Decat, a decat system tends to smoke a little but that would be black smoke from over fueling slightly as AEP86 mentioned....

Doing a service on your turbo is also always a good idea.... And checking ur valve stem seals, that would give you the white smoke with oil smell.....

And lastly, welcome to being an SX owner, where some have said (and some have quoted in their signatures) that "Owning an SX varies between having s3x and being kicked in the balls, and trust me, it will feel like you get kicked in the balls more often than having s3x..... Also, you are now going to become a lot poorer, just like the rest of us, the downside to our addiction.......

update

Post by SMKNG ACE »

well guys today it did it again, so i pulled over reved it up to the red line and checked at the back for smoke ie. white , blue, or black.

It reved up good with no smoke at all only when it came down to idling speed it almost stalls and then some black smoke. Some over fueling there to bring it to idle. it is only then that i saw smoke and confirmed. Is it normal for a CA18DET to do that or not ?

So it is not much to worry for now but will do the turbo seals anyway just to be on the save side.

Any one knows of a place that would sell the turbo seals in cape town ?

have worked on turbo before so i might do it myself if time allows it , but R3000 for labor is ridiculous if you ask me ; it is not rocket science :roll:

ITs better to replace the Turbo...

South African companies cannot balance a turbo and would N@@! u for R3000 which you could of used for a new turbo. The seal Kit alone is almost R1000!!!

A particular Stallion company in pta balance at something like 6000rpm...your turbo is made to spin up to 120-130 000rpms.........

Try turbo direct, i heard they had some special machine, personally i think it would be your best bet, and they got some specials running now.

To my knowledge Turbo direct has the best equipment in the country..

They have some specials running now aswell.

The other option is to get a Sr20DET turbo...but its rare..i installed one myself :D but i was lucky
