Exhaust manifold gaskets

Post by ChemCool »

Jay Boy, Nuren,

I think this time I must fit proper manifold gaskets. Even if the sx must stand longer on the tressels. Where do i get those copper ones or alike?
I phoned a company GMC 011 8681041. Yes they can and they cannot. Decided not to make use of theire services.

OK here is my five cents LOL take one of your old gaskets to a spares shop and see if they can match it up to another cars one, but see if you can get a copper or mild steel one!! i know of a place that will cut you a set aswell just need to go find there contact details, will get back to you on that!

While we at the gaskets. Listen to this advice I received from a well known
turbo company: they say a must fit a double set of the normal gaskets. What do you think about this one?

it could help but at the same time you could be worst off!!! for example the way i see it lets say for argument sake your car boosts 1bar if the pressure is 1bar in the intake side of the turbo it should be 1bar at the zorst side?? agree?? so if you put two gaskets it gives the pressure more survace to push against!! thats how i see it??? its just gonna have a bigger area to find a weakspot!! what do you think of that argument?? am i being silly in thinking so?? :?

It would be worst off. Your explaination is on the spot Jay_boy.
we have to ask ourselves, why do these gaskets keep blowing?
Here's the reason's I too have done these gaskets plenty of times but I have found a solution.
Firstly, can we agree that heat expands & coldness contracts? Yes we can so I can go on.
The manifold is subject to both of these. Heats up when you start car & cools down when not in use. The gasket needs to cater for this, which it does. The other reason we use a gasket is so that we can make a seal between the two metal surfaces.
Gaskets do blow, but after a very long time, so why does the Nissan one blow so often?
The reason is that poeple firstly use the wrong bolts. The bolt has to be copper as this is soft enough to expand with the metal. The second very important reason is that people don't use a washer(spacer) between the bolt & contacting surface.
What this means is that vibration is sent directly onto the bolt which eventually works it's way loose.
Nissan has actually given you two plates that acts as a washer & as lock plates to prevent the bolt from coming loose.
Mechanics normally forget to put these back!!

So the plain answer to why gaskets keep blowing is vibration, which moves the metal surfaces which causes play on the gasket which allows the gas to put extra pressure & before you know it the gasket can't handle it anymore & eventually blows.

If the job is done right the gasket should last another 100000k's. Think about it guys, when Nissan made the cars the gasketed lasted but once it blew, people can't get it to stop, that's because the wrong things are used.

Bolt, Special washer locky thingy, correct gasket & lots of torque.....sorted. 8)

Thats the problem i have the wasshers and i have the nissan nuts i went a bought from them and they were not cheap!! but yet again the gasket blew but you see my problem is that its the same damb gasket thet blows every time so that has led me to beleve that my manafold might be a bit off so gonna send it in for a surface grind and see??

Is it the same washers that can lock the nut?
It should be. They are about R60.00 each & you need 2.

The surface not being square will also blow the gasket as the gasket has to cover a larger area.

The sx is now fine. Feels solid. Gaskets fitted with no leaks. No double gaskets, no firegum-just good quality gaskets(from Autozone would you beleive), tighten the manifold from the middle outwards. Definitely spacers as woohaa has mentioned. Turbo now fitted with T28 wheelietjie.
Timing sorted out, busy increasing timing with mm's for degrees by degrees etc.
